WE ARE CURRENTLY CLOSED TO NEW SUBMISSIONS
WHAT WE WANT
SHORT STORY/FLASH FICTION/NONFICTION:
We welcome submissions from both Africans and non-Africans, as long as they are rooted in African cultures. Does it sound like Africa? Does it look like Africa? Do you know about African cultures and history? Then we would love to hear from you. However, if making your characters black is the only African attribute in your piece, then it is probably not for us.
We want you to dive into rare African histories, cultures, and traditions, tweak them to your taste and sprinkle some magic, science, horror, or mainstream drama over them. Then serve them to us on a platter made of an unusual, fluid voice, a well-defined plot, characters that are larger than life, dry humour, and imageries that leave their imprints in our minds long after we finish devouring them.
We consider original stories, and reprints, up to 2000 words. Stories longer than 2000 words will not be considered.
When your work is accepted, we publish your piece on our website and in our subsequent quarterly anthology.
HOW TO SUBMIT:
Submit your work as a DOC, DOCX, or RTF attachment to email@example.com. Please, do not write your story/poem in the body of the email, as it will not be considered.
Kindly do well to submit well-edited and properly formatted works using the standard manuscript format.
Please use “Fiction/Nonfiction Submission: Story Title” as the subject of your story submission email. Emails with no subject line may end up in our Spam folder, and may not be addressed.
We consider poems not longer than forty lines and we prefer them dark, speculative, and humorous.
Use “Poetry Submission: Poem Title” as the subject of your email.
We accept unsolicited artwork. Your artwork must be attached in JPEG or PNG format, and the file size should be no more than 5 MB.
Use “Artwork Submission: Artwork Title” as the subject of your email.
MULTIPLE AND SIMULTANEOUS SUBMISSIONS:
We are not enthusiastic about multiple submissions. However, you can send in one submission per category at the same time but do well to send them as different emails.
We don’t mind simultaneous submissions, provided that you alert us if your piece is accepted elsewhere.
We try to respond to all submissions within two weeks. However, if you haven’t heard from us in a month, do query via the email firstname.lastname@example.org with “Query: Piece Title” as the subject. In the body of your email, include the date and type of submission.
N/B: Submissions which do not follow the above guidelines may not receive a response.
